The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) recently announced that there are job opportunities available for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) returning from Lebanon due to the escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah militants. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized that various government agencies, including the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), are providing post-repatriation assistance to OFWs returning from conflict zones such as Lebanon.
Cacdac elaborated on the assistance provided, stating, "We facilitate their job placements. There are job opportunities available through DOLE. TESDA also offers training opportunities. Returning OFWs will be given vouchers to choose a training course and institution."
He further explained that the DMW also offers job facilitation overseas, where the OFWs' job records and experience are assessed to enable them to work in other countries. In addition, the DMW, along with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Agriculture, have programs to assist OFWs in starting businesses.
Cacdac also mentioned that returning OFWs will receive financial assistance from the government. As of now, there are a total of 11,000 Filipinos in Lebanon, some of whom are undocumented.
The Philippine Embassy in Lebanon has advised Filipinos to leave the country immediately while the airport is still accessible. Those unable to leave were urged by the Embassy to evacuate to safer areas outside of Beirut, South Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley.
